Makaton

It promotes awareness and educates children, making them aware of other childrens needs and allowing them to communicate effectively.

Devising informal actions and signs to go with known songs and rhymes can help your child meet some of the developmental goals set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage profile, e.g.. the EYFS goal which states that a child 'listens with enjoyment to stories, songs, rhymes and poems, sustains attentive listening and responds with relevant comments, questions or actions'.

Please download an example of how to use makaton when singing the five little ducks here.

and additional information about how makaton can support your child here.

Jolly Phonics

At ABC we use the Jolly Phonics learning program to introduce and develop initial speech sounds in a fun and engaging way.

What is Jolly Phonics?

Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers.

Letter Sound Order

The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

How does Jolly Phonics work?

Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing. The program continues through school enabling the teaching of essential grammar, spelling and punctuation skills.

Please download the Jolly Phonics songs here to become familiar with the songs and support your child at home.
